Well-known TV pirated organizations have jointly made a decision: they will no longer release videos of Xvid / avi format, and turn to use MP4/x264 format. This decision are seen as black-box operations and lack of democracy by part of the BitTorrent users, some of them even threatened to boycott the videos they released.

Pirated organizations pointed out in the video standard “The SD x264 TV Releasing Standards 2012″ that, x264 has become the most advanced codec in the past few years, compared with Xvid, it can provide higher video quality and higher compression ratio under standard definition (SD) resolution.

Since February 22, Video publishing organizations such as ASAP, BAJSKORV, C4TV, D2V, DiVERGE, FTP, KYR, LMAO, LOL, MOMENTUM, SYS, TLA and YesTV started using the new format.

A number of BitTorrent users complained that their DVD player does not support MP4 format, some people speaked foul words on the publishing organizations, others made the released MP4 format into AVI format and re-upload them to the BT website.

H.264 is a video coding standard, X264 is a concrete realization of this standard. Just like the relationship between the computer we collectively referred to and Lenovo business computer. The following is a contrast picture of x264 and xvid, x264 files are on the left, xvid on the right.

X264 is an open source project as well as xvid, but x264 is using h.264 standard, while xvid uses mpeg-4 earlier standards. Because H.264 is the latest video coding standard officially released in 2003, usually x264′s compression video files are smaller than xvid’s compression files in the same quality, or it can be said that, in the same volume it has better compression quality than xvid files.

H264′s compression ratio is a little bit better than Xvid, however, it is just a small point. There are more compatible audio encoding in H264, generally, Xvid is only compatible with MP3. In fact, the two encoders are good, very suitable for high-definition video package.

MPEG LA announced that it will not impose fee on online videos the end users freely enjoy during AVC patent license’s approval period (“AVC videos spreading via network”). Previously, MPEG LA had announced that it will not impose fee for such videos before December 31, 2015, this announcement made it clear that subsequently it will not impose such video charges. Other products and services except network AVC videos will continue to collect service charges.

MPEG LA’s AVC Patent License can use a series of patents about AVC/H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10) digital video decoding standard. In addition to the AVC videos spreading via network, MPEG LA’s AVC Patent License also covers the equipments used for encoding and decoding AVC videos, the AVC videos sold to end users in subscription way, and free television video services. AVC videos are used in set-top boxes, media player and other PC software, mobile phones, mobile TV receiver and other mobile devices, Blu-ray player and recording equipments, Blu-ray video discs, game consoles, personal media playback devices, video recorders and so on.

On Barcelona MWC 2012, in addition to the Snapdragon S4 processor, Qualcomm also showed the effect of next-generation video coding standard and H.264 successor H.265. Such as H.264 is also called AVC (Advanced Video Codec), H.265′s code-name is HEVC (High Effciency Video Codec). As the resolution of the network transmission streaming media is growing larger and larger, the requirements for bandwidth is much higher, H.265 can provide a smaller bitrate under similar quality.

HEVC video’s contrast target Qualcomm demonstrated was the AVC with the same source,  under the PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) which is the most widely used objective evaluation criteria (HEVC is 39.72, AVC is 39.65, the resolution is the same 800 * 480), HEVC video’s bit rate is 610kbps, the file size is 3.10MB; AVC video’s bit rate is 1183kbps, the file size is 6.01MB. According to Qualcomm staff, HEVC can save 40-45% bitrate comparing to AVC.

According to MeFeedia’s data, there are now 80% of videos use H.264 encoding, which means that these videos only need to use HTML5′s video tag to play on the iPad. Any video release party does not need any transcoding to release these videos to the iPad, they simply need to replace their own web Flash player with HTML5.

The chart below shows how fast the video industry adapts to the H.264 and makes it the actual industry standard. In early 2010, there were only 10% using H.264, while in less than two years, this proportion rose to 80%. This change is largely thanks to the iPad and other emerging devices, most of these devices support H.264 hardware acceleration.

With the growing number of devices that support H.264 decoding, we should also see the further development of the share. To be sure, at least within a short time, H.264 has already won the battle of the video encoding.

Mozilla began an internal discussion of whether to support the H.264 video codec last week , Mozilla executives have publicly expressed their support for the private codec. Mozilla’s discussion for H.264 mainly concentrated on Boot2Gecko mobile platform and the Android version of Firefox at the beginning, but with the deepening of the discussion, the desktop version was also included in consideration.

The controversy of the problem is that the proprietary patented technology is contradictory with Mozilla’s open Web mission. Mozilla Chairman Mitchell Baker and CEO Brendan Eich acknowledged that mobile’s success forces them to give up their pursuit to make WebM become HTML5 streaming video standard, while VP8 never posed a threat to H.264 on desktop. 80% of the HTML5 videos are encoded by H.264, H.264 is essential for mobile competition. Eich said, Google failed to promote WebM and exclude H.264 on Android, Mozilla can not wait for the day of Google’s success.

Mozilla development director Andreas Gal disclosed in the Developer Forum that Firefox will support H.264 video hardware decoding, currently mainly for the Android platform, in the future it may be extended to the desktop. Andreas Gal said, hardware-accelerated audio and video codec will support the codec comes with systems such as Android, the use of hardware-accelerated codec will help to extend battery life and enhance performance.

Desktop’s situation is more complicated,  H.264 codec is installed in Windows 7, but Windows XP does not, so Mozilla is for the mobile platform at this stage.

If you scoff at the current AVC tools, you must have found some of the problems of AVC. It is the compatibility problem: the AVC tools support different containers:

.mp4: mp4 is the AVC container MPGE-4 standard (ISO 14496-15) specified. Currently the encoders support it include Nero, Sorenson, Envivio, and Moonlight.

.mpg: mpg is the AVC container MPEG-2 standard (ISO 13818-1, AMD3) specified. The encoders support it are: Mainconcept and Moonlight. (Blu-ray BD-ROM will also use this container)

.avi: use AVI as a container is not standard and may cause incompatibility problems. Use  AVI may hinder the play of some AVC functions, it may also damage the quality of playback, or reduce the decoding speed. Currently the encoders support AVI are VSS, x264 (mencoder and x264′s vfw both support) and mpegable.

.264/.h264: Usually refers to the source image the encoder output as an example. (Mencoder’s x264 can also output .264).
